How Parents Can Block Certain Websites from Children at Home

[For non-techie parents who have a computer at home and are worried about their kids safety online.]

A mother recently wrote saying she is very concerned that her young children are spending too much time on websites like Orkut, MySpace and Facebook.
Her worries are not just about children wasting time on the Internet - it’s more about the activities that children are doing on these sites. She is concerned that children could be interacting with complete strangers (or online predators) and even sharing personal information.
And with some news reports saying that criminal activities could have been planned on Orkut, the mother has finally made up her mind to restrict access to Orkut and some other websites on the home computer.
The only problem is that she has absolutely no clue about how to block websites – parental control software like Net Nanny or Norton Internet Security are pretty good but they cost money.
Now before you take this extreme step of blocking website (that is very likely to be opposed by children), try a few things:
  1. Educate your children about the dangers of sharing information online with strangers. Family members should talk in detail about privacy and the web.
  2. Place the computer in the living area of your home from where you can easily see the screen so you’ll have some idea about activities that children are doing on the computer including the websites they are visiting frequently.
  3. Orkut is an open social network – that means you can easily see who’s in the friends’ list of your children and what kind of text notes (or scraps) are they exchanging with each.
Finally, to block websites on your home computer without investing in expensive software, here’s the trick (for Windows PCs):
Step 1: Click the Start button and select Run. Now type the following text in that Run box:
notepad c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Step 2: You will see a new notepad window on your screen containing some cryptic information. Don’t panic. Just goto the last line of the file, hit the enter key and type the following:
127.0.0.1 orkut.com
127.0.0.1 facebook.com
127.0.0.1 myspace.com
Save the file and exit. That’s it. None of the above sites will now open on your computer.
You can block as many websites as you like with the above technique. If you want to remove the ban later, open the same file as mentioned in Step 1 and delete the above lines.
Pretty simple but remember, our children are also very smart. And there are some popular ways to unblock sites.

NEW OS CREATED BY 2nd YEAR " B.E " STUDENT

MICROS has been designed by a second-year engineering student
A system crash one year ago forced Deepak John, a second-year engineering student, to devise a portable operating system on cloud, which can solve many problems of travelling professionals, who seek access to secure computers.
The MICROS (Mobile In-Curred Revolutionised Operating System), which has won laurels in nationwide tech fests, boots from a pen drive, to the RAM which then dynamically expands. “The size is limited to 100MB — that makes the distribution of the package easier,” says Deepak, studying in the Loyola-ICAM College of Engineering and Technology (LICET). He calls it a live OS that does not require installation but allows you to access the files stored in the system and perform various file management functions. “This is the best time to access the benefits of cloud, and also have an operating system of your own,” he says.
Multitasking is enabled by the Windows Pre-installation Environment (PE). Open Office is integrated into the system. Users can also access the web and run various Windows applications on MICROS. An application Cloud Command Control designed for MICROS accesses the cloud through a simple interface and a secure login.
As the user selects the drive to boot from the list of available storage devices, the rest is done automatically, in about 10 seconds. “MICROS helps people recover and repair, but it can also be used as a standard OS. It also maintains privacy as the OS gets deleted once switched off and the entire OS gets booted from a pen drive to a RAM hard disk,” says Deepak.
This means that once the system is shut down, the contents in the RAM get permanently deleted. “This ensures that the browsing history, cookies, and various other temporary files that contain vital information regarding your privacy details are deleted. Though the settings stored by various applications will also be erased, the virus, malware or spyware that may have infected MICROS will get deleted as well. ,” says Deepak.
Though it is just 90MB, it is stored in the fastest storage drive in the system and so is capable of running simultaneously many applications, including multimedia, and word processing.
In enhanced packages, MICROS will soon be upgraded to include motion-controlled gestures to control the cursor on screen, says Deepak.
The OS has been made into an open source software and abides by the licensing terms of Microsoft Corporation using the open source edition of Windows PE.
“It is simply a Plug and Play operating system, and combines the best of proprietary and free software, using the cloud to store data. This is what we need now, to ensure comfort of use, affordability and stability,” says the young developer...http://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/internet/article2523455.ece

Internet Connection Sharing on Windows XP

Internet Connection Sharing on Windows XP

This trick shows you how to share your internet connections on multiple computers within a workgroup with Windows XP. Windows XP has a built-in feature that called "Internet Connection Sharing" (ICS) that allows home users to share their internet connections on multiple computers.

If you are not familiar with the network configurations, the easiest way to share your internet connection is to purchase a router or hub. Use this trick only if you don't have a router, or don't want to use a router, or if you just want to try out the feature.

A simple way to understand this feature is, you are making your host computer (the computer directly connects to the internet) functioning as a router for other computers.

What do you need?

    * A "Host" computer that running Windows XP. This computer must have at least TWO (2) network adapters. One adapter - let's call it "Adapter #1" - connects to the internet and another, "Adapter #2", connects to a hub or directly to other computers.
    * Client computer(s), which run any version of Windows. A client computer can be connected to the host computer directly by a cross-over cable or indirectly through a hub.
    * This trick assumes that the host computer is connected to the internet and you are able to access the internet on this computer.

Configure the Host Computer

   1. Logon the host computer as Administrator.
   2. Click Start >> Control Panel.
   3. Click Network and Internet Connections.
   4. Click Network Connections.
   5. Right-click the connection that you use to connect to the internet (the connection with Adapter #1). This connection can be either a high-speed internet connection or a dial-up connection.
   6. Click Properties.
   7. Click Advanced tab.
   8. Under Internet Connection Sharing, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box.
   9. If you are sharing a dial-up Internet connection, select the Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet check box if you want to permit your computer to automatically connect to the Internet.
  10. Click OK. You'll reieve the following message:
When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, your LAN adapter will be set to use IP address 192.168.0.1. Your computer may lose connectivity with other computers on your network. If these other computers have static IP addresses, it is a good idea to set them to obtain their IP addresses automatically. Are you sure you want to enable Internet Connection Sharing?
  11. Click Yes.

Configure the Client Computer(s)

To use the shared connection from the Host computer, a client computer must be configured with "Automatic IP address". The main configurations are:

   1. Configure TCP/IP Automatic IP
   2. Configure Internet Connection

The steps for the above two configurations are vary on different versions of Windows.
The following procedures are for Windows XP client computers.

   1. Log on to the client computer as Administrator or as Owner.
   2. Click Start >> Control Panel.
   3. Click Network and Internet Connections.
   4. Click Network Connections.
   5. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
   6. Click the General tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the This connection uses the following items list, and then click Properties.
   7. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, click Obtain an IP address automatically (if it is not already selected), and then click OK.

   8. Click Start >> Control Panel
   9. Click Network and Internet Connections.
  10. Click Internet Options.
  11. In the Internet Properties dialog box, click the Connections tab.
  12. Click the Setup button. The New Connection Wizard starts.
  13. On the Welcome to the New Connection Wizard page, click Next.
  14. Click Connect to the Internet, and then click Next.
  15. Click Set up my connection manually, and then click Next.
  16. Click Connect using a broadband connection that is always on, and then click Next.
  17. On the Completing the New Connection Wizard page, click Finish.
  18. Exit Control Panel and test the internet. You might need to restart the computer.

   3. Now go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Show Your Name

This tip is absolutely and completely useless. The way this trick works is by modifying the regional settings for the time format. Instead of using just AM or PM, you can put up to 12 characters of text in that field.

Start by opening Regional and Language Options from the start menu search box or the control panel.

On the Formats tab you'll see the "Customize this format" button, which you'll need to choose.
Select the Time tab, and then here's where we can make whatever settings we want.

I chose to set mine to "AM - abhishek " so I could still see AM or PM, but you can choose any 12 characters for either field. Keep in mind that the PM symbol is only going to display during the "PM" hours.
